Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (born 1888) is considered the founder of modern day yoga as we know it today, his teachings to Pattabi Jois, BKS Iyengar, BNS Iyengar Indra Devi, and son, T.K.V. Desikachar have allowed Yoga to cross to the West presented as what we know as Ashtanga, Iyengar or Viniyoga. Although such a pioneer, Krishnamacharya never claimed originality of the practices and teachings, but rather attributed them to the ancient texts, his gurus or God. At the instruction of his guru, Krishnamacharya was instructed to spread the message of yoga, marry and learn about family life to further teach the modern generation.
